| About the Planning Department The Town of East Hampton treasures and is committed to sustaining its diverse array of cultural, natural, rural, scenic, historic, prehistoric, and agricultural resources. The Planning Department plays a major stewardship role by providing professional planning and technical analysis of how the town's land use affects these resources. The Director and Department personnel use their various expertise to support the town's policies as outlined in the Town Comprehensive Plan.
The Planning Department reviews all applications for development that require approvals from the Zoning Board and Planning Board. We also offer input to the Architectural Review Board, the Town Board and the Town Trustees. The Department’s staff members serve on several Town committees, participate in the development of Town policies and regulations and work on a wide array of Town projects. We represent the Town in a number of East End and Suffolk County Planning efforts.

- Downtown Montauk Hamlet Study
The Planning Department is currently working on the Montauk Hamlet study called for in recommendation #33 of the Town Comprehensive Plan. This plan will address the unique needs of downtown Montauk and the challenges facing this community. We will post information regarding the study and our progress in this location as it becomes available. Please feel free to contact the Planning Department if you have any questions regarding the study. The Department and the Town Board reviewed the study area boundary and outline at the February 7, 2006 Town Board Work Session.
The Planning Department presented the draft Inventory section of the plan to the Town Board at the August 5, 2008 Town Board work session. The next step in the process is a workshop to analyze the results of the inventory, develop the plan and recommendations and determine how the problems identified should be solved. Public participation will be encouraged. The Town Board will schedule the workshop for sometime in September or October.
